Equine Anhidrosis: Recognizing and Supporting the “Non-Sweater”

Equine anhidrosis is a decreased ability—or complete inability—to sweat in response to heat or exercise. Because sweating is a horse’s primary cooling mechanism, anhidrosis can become a serious health and safety concern, particularly during hot, humid weather. 

Horses with anhidrosis are often called “non-sweaters” or may be described as having “dry coat syndrome.” The condition can range from mild, patchy sweating to a near-total absence of sweat production. Without adequate sweating, a horse may struggle to regulate body temperature and can be at risk for heat stress or heatstroke.

Why Sweating Matters

During exercise, a horse’s muscles produce a large amount of heat. Evaporation of sweat is responsible for approximately 65–70% of heat loss in exercising horses. When humidity is high, sweat evaporates less efficiently, making it even more difficult for a horse to cool itself. A horse with anhidrosis may continue to work, building up internal heat because its normal cooling system is not functioning effectively. Prompt recognition and thoughtful management are essential.

What Causes Equine Anhidrosis?

The exact cause of anhidrosis is not fully understood. It is most often seen in regions with prolonged heat and humidity, including the southeastern United States, but it can occur anywhere during hot weather.

Current veterinary understanding suggests that anhidrosis may involve reduced 
responsiveness of sweat glands to normal stimulation. Long-term heat exposure, individual susceptibility, and possible genetic factors may all play a role. Some medical conditions and medications can also affect sweating, so veterinary evaluation is important.

Anhidrosis can affect horses of any breed, age, sex, or color. It may develop gradually over a season or become noticeable quite suddenly.

Indicators of Anhidrosis

A horse does not need to stop sweating completely to have anhidrosis. Early cases may show reduced or uneven sweating rather than an entirely dry coat. Watch for these indicators:

  • Little, patchy, or no sweat during exercise or hot weather
  • Slow recovery after exercise
  • Reduced stamina, poor performance, reluctance to work, or exercise intolerance
  • Lethargy, fatigue or appearing distressed in hot and humid conditions
  • Dry, flaky skin - often noticeable on the forehead
  • Reduced appetite or decreased water consumption in more advanced situations
  • Increased heart rate, fever, or signs of heat distress

When to Contact Your Veterinarian

A horse that is not sweating normally in the heat should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Signs such as labored breathing, weakness, confusion, collapse, very high body temperature, or failure to recover after exercise require immediate veterinary attention.

Your veterinarian can assess the horse’s history, clinical signs, hydration, temperature, respiratory status, and overall health. Veterinary assessment is also important to rule out other causes of poor performance, overheating, respiratory distress, or illness and to address the immediate emergency appropriately.

Acupressure Support for Horses with Anhidrosis

Acupressure may be used as a gentle, complementary wellness practice for horses receiving veterinary care and appropriate heat-management support. It should not replace diagnosis, emergency cooling, veterinary treatment, or necessary changes in turnout and exercise.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, anhidrosis may be viewed as an imbalance involving the body’s ability to regulate fluids, cooling, respiration, and protective energy. 

There are specific acupressure points, “acupoints,” proven to enhance fluid circulation and supporting the sweating function by bringing fluids to the surface of the body. This acupressure session is designed to support your horse’s ability to clear the internal heat that builds during exercise.

Offering this acupressure session consistently (two times per week) during the hot summer or warm conditions could help avoid anhidrosis. If you are concerned that your horse is experiencing even the slightest heat-related distress, begin the cooling management process and offer this acupressure session while contacting your veterinarian and follow her recommendations.

Acupoints selected in an anhidrosis-support session include:

Bladder 40 (Bl 40): Traditionally used to clear heat and support the back and hind limbs.

Heart 7 (Ht 7): Regulates sweating and calms the spirit.

Lung 7 (Lu 7): Traditionally used to support Lung function and the circulation of Defensive Wei Chi.

Large Intestine 4 (LI 4): A powerful point traditionally used to move chi and support the body’s exterior. Do not use this point on a pregnant mare. 

Kidney 7 (Ki 7): Associated with fluid regulation and sweating.

Governing Vessel 14 (GV 14): Commonly used to clear heat and support the body’s regulatory functions.

Gently apply pressure on the acupoints shown in the chart on one side of your horse and then repeat these acupoints of the opposite side. While applying these points, observe your horse’s responses. If your horse is uncomfortable with an acupoint, move to the next. If your horse becomes agitated, prioritize cooling and veterinary guidance.

A Final Note

Anhidrosis is more than a performance concern—it can place a horse at significant risk during hot weather. Early recognition, veterinary evaluation, practical cooling strategies, and careful management can make an important difference in a horse’s comfort and safety.
